Die PCUP entstand 1990 durch die Abspaltung einer orthodoxen Minderheit vom reformkommunistischen [[PCS]]. <br /> <br /> Auf dem Parteikongress des PCS in [[Artir]] im Februar 1990 hatte sich eine Mehrheit der Delegierten für ein Reformprogramm ausgesprochen, das der Reformflügel um [[António Fiali]] und andere vorgelegt hatte. Unter anderem stimmte die Mehrheit der Partei für eine Umbenennung in [[Vereinigte Linkspartei]].
